Brenda Barrio
Dr. Brenda Barrio is Associate Professor of Special Education (Critical Perspectives) at the University of North Texas
As a former bilingual special education teacher and now teacher educator, equity and access for students from diverse cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds have been at the forefront of her work for the past 16 years. From a socio-cultural and historical framework, Dr. Barrio’s work focuses on addressing disproportionality in special education.
Through a pragmatist lens, she critically examines systems, policies, and practices of oppression and inequity, and addresses them through culturally responsive pedagogies and social justice in education. Her practice is guided by her mixed methods research embedded in the community where the voices of underrepresented populations are the main focus.
