Michela Musto
Dr. Michela Musto, a white, queer, and non-binary person, is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of British Columbia.
They use qualitative and quantitative methods to examine how the social construction of exceptionalism legitimizes intersecting forms of inequality in an array of settings, ranging from K-12 classrooms to professional sports. Musto’s award-winning research – which has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the NAEd/Spencer Foundation, and the American Association for University Women – has been published in numerous peer-reviewed outlets, including the American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Gender & Society, among others. Currently, Musto is working on a book manuscript that is under contract with the University of Chicago Press. Tentatively titled Boys Will Be Boys, this project draws on 2.5 years of longitudinal ethnography and 196 interviews with middle school teachers and students to show how taken-for-granted school processes allow White boys to rise to the top of racialized and gendered hierarchies in early adolescence.
